Almost everything in Leticia happens within a few streets of the river. You do not need to research neighbourhoods the way you would in Bogotá or Medellín: the city has one centre, one market, one airport and a road that leads to Brazil.
What actually changes your trip is the type of place: a hostel in town with pool and bar, a mid-range hotel with air conditioning, or a lodge outside the city where the forest starts at the door. This guide explains each one honestly, with real prices.
The three areas, and what each one gives you
A practical detail: if you plan to take several tours, staying in town matters. All tours leave at 9:00 a.m. from the centre, and many include a stop at your accommodation.
- City centre (Carrera 10 to 11, around Calle 13). Walk to the market, the port, restaurants and the agencies. This is where tours leave from, and it is the only area where you can do everything on foot. Casa de las Palmas is five blocks from the centre: close enough to walk everywhere, far enough to sleep without the traffic.
- Near the airport. Practical for one-night stops and early flights; less pleasant to walk around and further from the river.
- Outside the city (kilometre 6 to 11). Jungle lodges and reserves with birds, silence and hammocks. You will need a tour or a transfer for everything, and you will not be able to walk to dinner.
What the night actually sounds like
This is the detail nobody puts in a listing: the nights here are quiet. You will hear a few motorbikes and the occasional car — less than downtown, five blocks away — and then the forest: frogs, crickets and owls. Our bar plays music until 10 p.m. at a moderate volume, and now and then a neighbour plays something, but it does not go late.
That is Leticia in general, not just this house: at night you hear a bit of everything — small parrots and birds in the trees, dogs, roosters, people talking, a motorbike going past. It is not unbearable, and most guests stop noticing it after the first night.
A tip from us: if you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs. It is the simplest solution and it works.
If you are a light sleeper, ask for a room facing the patio. H1, H2 and H3 face the pool, H4 and H6 face the courtyard and the internal corridor, and H5 and H7 face the street.
One honest detail: the walls are mostly wood and the windows are not glass — they are mosquito mesh (angeo), as in most houses in Leticia. That lets the air through and keeps the mosquitoes out, so the rooms do not turn into an oven in the afternoon. The flip side is that sound travels a little too: the fan usually covers the rest.
Hostel, hotel or lodge?
- Hostel (COP 40.000 – 140.000 per person). Dorm beds from about COP 40.000, private doubles from about COP 115.000. Hammocks, pool, other travellers and tours organised on site. The best value in Leticia.
- Hotel (COP 180.000 – 400.000). Air conditioning, private bathroom, breakfast, often a pool. Quieter, less social, and you will still book tours with an agency.
- Jungle lodge (COP 250.000 – 600.000 with meals). The full Amazon experience: you sleep in the forest and eat what the lodge cooks. Beautiful, but you are tied to their schedule and their prices.
What to check before you book
- Air conditioning or fan? In Leticia this is the difference between sleeping and not sleeping. Ask explicitly.
- Almost everything on one level. Rooms, pool, bar and hammocks are on the same floor, with a few low steps and short wooden walkways to some corners — easy to cross. The only real stairs are the bunk ladders in the shared dorms, and you can ask for a lower bunk.
- Is there a pool? In Leticia it is the difference between a hot afternoon and a good one.
- Breakfast included? It saves time before the 9:00 a.m. departures.
- Do they organise tours? A hostel that runs its own tours solves your whole trip in one conversation.
- Airport transfer? The airport is ten minutes away; a mototaxi costs very little, but a pickup is nice on arrival.
- Cancellation policy. Amazon plans change with the river.
The house: fifty years of patio
Casa de las Palmas is not a new building. It is a house of around fifty years, which in Leticia means something: the city is young, and this patio and pool have been part of the neighbourhood for two generations. Many people in Leticia know the house — for the patio, the pool and an atmosphere that has always been simple, friendly and welcoming.
You notice it in the details: wooden walls, mesh windows instead of glass, hammocks between the trees, people who have been coming here for years. It is not a design hostel; it is a house that has hosted travellers for a long time and still does.
And it is a house that keeps changing. We are renovating it little by little, as we can: the services, the rooms, the activities, the social spaces, the small gym, the restaurant. Nothing happens overnight, but if you come back after a year you will notice it — guests who return after a long time always do.
Internet and the kitchen, honestly
Two things we prefer to say before you arrive. The first is Wi-Fi: we pay for one of the best plans available in Leticia, and it works in the common areas. But the internet here is not like in a big city. It has improved a lot in the last two years, and it still goes down some days — weather, infrastructure, a cable somewhere. If your trip depends on a video call, plan for a backup.
Which, honestly, is part of travelling here: in the Amazon you disconnect from the internet and connect with nature and the present moment.
The second is the kitchen. The only thing we do not lend is the stove. If you need to cut something up, you have plates, glasses and cutlery, and you can keep things in the fridge — as long as you leave everything tidy and respect the waste separation. Nobody is going to count your spoons; we just ask for the same care we take.
Why we suggest our own hostel (and when not to)
Casa de las Palmas is a hostel in the centre of Leticia with a pool, hammocks and a bar, and we run our own jungle tours from the same house. If you want to meet other travellers, swim after a hot day and have your tour pick you up at the door, this is what we do.
- Choose us if: you want a pool, a bar, other travellers and tours organised on site, from COP 40.000 a bed.
- Choose a hotel if: you need silence, air conditioning and room service, and you are happy to book tours separately.
- Choose a lodge if: you came for the forest and do not mind being far from the city for two or three days.

Quick questions
Is it better to stay in the centre of Leticia?
Yes if you are taking tours: everything leaves from the centre and you can walk to the market and the port. The outskirts are for lodges, not for a base.
How much does a hostel cost in Leticia?
From about COP 40.000 per dorm bed and COP 115.000 for a private double. It is the cheapest way to stay in the Colombian Amazon.
Do I need air conditioning?
A fan is usually enough at night, but if you suffer from heat, ask for air conditioning before booking.
Are there stairs in the hostel?
Almost everything is on one level, with a few low steps and short wooden walkways to some corners. The only real stairs are the bunk ladders in the shared dorms, and you can ask for a lower bunk.
Can I book tours from the hostel?
At Casa de las Palmas yes: we run our own tours and they leave from the door at 9:00 a.m.
How far is the airport?
About ten minutes by mototaxi. We can arrange a pickup.
